Rebuilt Engine and New Paint PICS
I recently rebuilt my 2.4 and had painted it irish green with gold valve covers. I recently had to take it out again to rebuild the tranny so while it was out I decided to go with something a little more loud being that my 71 targa would have originally come with a 2.2 and now boasts a 2.4!
With a new shroud in hand I spent several hours filling / puttying the seems and fiberglassed Almost All original holes that appeared on the top of the cover. I also have modified it so that Any and All wiring is now being routed under the cover, unseen. By my new design I will also have an easier time of removing the cover, when needed, to get to the altenator. The wires are not prohibiting the cover removal in any way. I've also changed the location of the coil so that it is not on top of the altenator. I've also changed the lower covers to the much beefier 911 Turbo valve covers and Sanded the Porsche word from the uppers. New heater ducts and soon to put on the repainted (silver) Weber intake manifolds. Here are some photos of the engine after test fitting all parts along with a photo of when I first bought the car, can you see the difference?! Soon to be mated to the Tranny and then back in the car this weekend. Any of you have experiece w/ putting the eng/tranny in the car as a unit? It turned out really clean. Did you paint or powder coat the fan assembly?
Yes, I feel installing the tranny outside and the whole assembly easier. There is virtually no heavy lifting or man handling anything this way. You just want a large platform jack/atv jack to easily balance it. Did you get the carbs refurbished? Aircleaner? 901 or 915? Reply #1 |
Thanks for the response! I used Automotive paint on all parts. I've used this in the past on hot engine parts and never ran into a problem. The fan is Guards Red and the yellow is 06 S2000. As far as the carbs they are the only "weak link" left in the assembly. They run, but not the best right now, I will be rebuilding them as soon as I can.
Air Cleaner!.. Ive been looking for Individual ones to fit onto the webers, but dont want to spend the $200. Im thinking of Fabricating a base and top out of aluminum, and then just getting the K&N filters to fit in. The tranny is an early 915. Thanks again for the interest. |

Thanks... It took a while to get rid of all the holes, indentions, and body seams in the cover, but I think it came out great!

very very nice, its what i expected mine to look like (clean)....not what i recieved...
pretty soon i will be under take that chore of cleaniong up the engine bay...welll not soon...but some day. mines even busies, cause of dual plugging....and a newer car (75) and cause nothing is original....in some areas it looks mickey-moused....damn.. i love nice clean engine bays....you got one now :P |
Anyone else have concerns about routing the harness under the shroud? I think it looks great, don't get me wrong. Still, I wonder about all the heat from the engine parts slow-roasting the harness, and all the forced air and particles from the fan doing damage to the wrapping.

DTW, I have insulated the wires with electrical tape and then put on plastic Wire loom. I dont think the heat is the concern as so much the engine vibration touching the Wires which could cause the shield to "tear". This is why I have also put the plastic wire loom on top. I have also used zip ties to keep the wire loom fairly fixed to one spot, rather than just letting them hang loosely.

Looks nice. Where did you get the engine shroud? Did you buy a new one, or use the old one? Can you buy a new engine shroud? I couldn't find one on Pelican. |
I "refurbed" an Old one I had. Im not sure you can buy them new, not that Im aware of, but I have heard of some people fabricating "new" ones from fiberglass.. by using an original. I think one of the things that doesnt come out the same is that some of the original ones have a fiberglass texture to them where you can see the "grain" if you would in them. .. But im not 100%.
If you have an old one you may just consider cleaning/painting it yourself. |

Looks nice. You should definately have those intakes plugged with rags though!
You can indeed still buy them, in a variety of colors including clear. I believe MA Shaw has them. I did mine too, in Gulf Orange...lets see if I can find a pic... |

Use the air hoses from Aircraft Spruce on that beautiful engine, they would look great with that paint scheme!
