Discontinued Parts -- What do do?
 

I've just been finishing up buying the engine parts that I need for my race motor, and the following parts turned up as discontinued and Pelican couldn't find a substitute.

Any suggestions how to go forward?

901-105-374-00-OEM: Threaded Plug (2 required), 911/911 Turbo (1974-89)

At one time both of these things appear to have been recommended replacement items. In the case of the threaded plug (901-105-374-00-OEM), I figure that I should be able to just reuse the old ones. As far as that sealing ring is concerned, a comparably sized copper crush washer should work just as well -- right?

Am I missing something obvious?

Regarding the sealing ring, I think "yes" a comparable sized copper crush washer should work fine-- that's all the sealing ring appears to be. If you need to reuse a copper crush washer, you can heat it with a torch red-hot, and it will "puff" back up (for lack of a better term) so you can crush it again to attain a proper seal. Of course, normally they are so inexpensive you don't need to do this, but if you can't get another, it's a viable solution.

I think the sealing rings are available from Pelican. I bought some for my rebuild, but I haven't checked to see if they were the right ones sent to me. For the old plug, if Pelican really doesn't have it, I bought a used part from DC Automotive on the web. I bought an SC front belly pan, but they seem to have everything there.

John I can probably put my hands on a couple of those plugs - but I'm sure you can re-use what you've got - anything I have is just good used/replated.

I'm pretty sure that I have the plugs that came with the motor when I bought it. I'm pretty sure that my "used" plugs are as good as yours. What's to fail on them?

That was sorta my point...thought you needed some. Nevermind.

I probably have a suitable sealing ring you can have. What is the inside diameter (in mm)?

The bolt should be easy. Figure out what thread you need and head to a machine shop and have a couple made. Ask them to make it from 4141 RC28-32 and you should be fine. It will probably cost you $100 per bolt but if you want exact...
