How to check a 915
I finally rebuilt and reassembled my 71 915 gearbox last night. Glad to have it back together. As I was looking it over and trying to shift the gears (with it out of the car) I could only get it to physically go into 3 gears by moving the selector shaft by hand (no tool). I could tell they were different because of the revolutions on the Driveshaft flanges. I could get it to shift into 2 gears that showed the flanges moving "the car" forward and One in Reverse. Is this NORMAL that I couldnt seem to "find" all 5, plus Reverse gears?
Thanks in advance! Mitch |
No; you should be able to get into all 6 gears "bench shifting" the transmission. Is there any gear oil on the operating sleeves, synchro rings, etc.? The shift rod coupler can be taken out of the car and secured to the shift rod and used as a "knob" to get more purchase for bench shifting.

Did you loosen any of the shift forks when you rebuilt the transmission? -Chris |
Thanks for the posts.. My difficulty when putting into gear was lack of Swepco/ Oil. works Fine now. I installed it in the car last night and drove it. Seems to be working Perfectly! I am very pleased w/ my first Rebuild on a Tranny! Now If I could only Solve the Mysterious Oil Leak Problem!... See recent Posts.. "Ridiculous Oil Leak"
