1979 3.0L engine to 1983 911SC Targa
Hello everyone:
I have a 1983 911SC Targa, so I thought I would ask this forum a technical question regarding "our" model. Can you mate a 1979 3.0L 911 engine with a 1983 911SC Targa car? Are there any issues, or rather is there a problem mating the transmission from the 83 to the 79 engine? I have noticed that 1978/1979 flywheel and pilot bearing part numbers are different. Is a 915 transmission from a 1979 911SC similar to a 1983 911SC transmission? What I have in mind is this, I have a 1979 911 engine that I am thinking about running in my car (1983 911SC Targa) while I remove and rebuild my original engine . Will this work? Or, should I find a 1979 911SC transmission to mate with the 1979 engine and then install as a complete package? Is this possible? How would some of you go about proceeding with this project? Thanks in advance for your help with this, guys! |
bolts right in, complete. you just wouldn't be able to use the car's oxygen sensor system, which is a good thing.

Thank you for helping with this question. That is wonderful news.
I will drop by to say "hello" in the Spring after the roads clear-up from all this snow we are having. I may have some cylinder heads that need working on. cheers.:) |
You may have a problem if your alternator for the 79 has not been changed to an internally regulated one.

Hey, buddy I did not think about that. You are correct and there WAS a change to the alternators with the voltage regulator being placed within the alternator instead of mounted on the left-side of the engine compartment. What would you recommend ? Thanks,:) |
the 79 wire harness will have a regulator plug on it, so get a regulator and mount it on the electrical panel. i believe the 14 pin plug to the panel still has the wires in the correct order, ie: blue to blue, black to black, etc. wouldn't hurt to check.
