Cracked fan housing - repairable?
I'm rebuilding my '82SC engine. Everything's apart and I'm cleaning and bead blasting away. I noticed cracks around one of the studs on the fan housing. Is it possible to weld these? Is the fan housing magnesium or aluminum?
Thanks. ![]()

Sadly at time of repair, their Mag. Yes it can be welded....I'd check around the airport or professional race shop. Many have had good luck with materials like JB Weld.
I still find it odd that so many shrouds crack in what seems like a fairly unstressed application. Before buying aftermarket, do a search there has been some quality issues with the Al ones.

I would check with Casper Labs, they are into rebuilding piston airplane engines and contribute to this thread. They also sell a good set of head studs.
