Heads and Camshaft Housings

I am putting the 3.0 back together. I have decided to put the heads on first, torque them, then put the cam housings on. I just finished the left side, and figured I should check in here to see if I should be freaking out about it.

My theory is that the sequence is a lesser of two evils scenario...where do you want the oil to leak from, the cylinder bases or the cam housings? Since this engine had about 600 miles on it (ring issues), I decided I'd try for an optimum seal at the cylinder/head interface, and let the Wurth Orange shmutz seal up the cam housings. The heads were relationally pretty flat after I put them on and torqued them down. When I assembled this the first go-round last August, I used the conventional method; torque the cam housings, then the heads.

I just think I can get a better combustion chamber seal this way, and hope the Wurth stuff keeps the oil in. Since I will be running a bit higher compression pressures, I thought I'd give it a try.

Any thoughts??

TIA

Pat

The only problem with this is that the heads may have to move abit to line up with the holes in the cam tower. I wouldn't do it because if I move the heads after I torque them they either won't move or they will disturb the seal you are trying to achieve.

I would not do it that way either, I only hand tightened the heads then I installed the cam towers and followed Wayne's recommendation for proper torqueing. If you do it backwards you may have problems aligning your cam towers over your heads then possibly have trouble in sealing them as well.

Good Luck,

Alex

Well, the heck with it. I did the heads, then cam housings. The cams turn just fine. I hope it doesn't leak, but it looks like a pretty good seal. Wurth says the orange stuff will hold pressure pretty well from 0.010" up to about 0.020".

I wouldn't worry about it. If you were able to get the towers on after then I'm sure it will be fine. I don't think the order is to ensure a good seal between the cam towers and the heads so much as to make sure the heads all line up so the cam towers will fit on.
