Valve springs
While setting valves, I found one intake spring weak enough that I could colapse it with the heel of my hand. Obviously, it needs to be replaced. Years ago with American Iron, we did this by charging the cylinder with compressed air and popping off the retainer. The issue on a P-car will be having room to accomplish the deed. Have any of you done this repair in car? If so, does there exist a compressor tool for the job? Thanks for your help!!

Yes you can do it the same way. You need an air fitting with spark plug threads. A leakdown tester should work if nothing else.

Air will work but lock the crank down, you can also feed some rope into the cylinder and bring the piston up to hold the valve, I have never done it on a porsche engine but it works well on the aircraft engines..

Here is a picture of the special tool needed to do the job.
You can do any cylinder, intake or exhaust in the car. I use a little light grease on the retainer keepers to hold them in place on reassembly. A small mirror is also helpful, depending on what location the cylinder is. Hope this helps. ![]() Last edited by rsscotty; 03-01-2007 at 05:38 PM.. |
