The 22nd Nut
I have a 1973.5 2.4 L.
The 22nd bolt/nut? Last night while crawling around under my car, I discovered that a bolt & nut were missing from the most forward hole in the bottom section that sews upthe two halves of my engine case (the bottom hole nearest the transmission). At first, I thought a stud had pulled out, but reading a thread on the other 911 BBS, suggested this is the "22nd" bolt that the PO did not install or let fall out. I want to replace it. Can anyone tell me the correct specs for that bolt/nut? Do I need a washer (s)? What is the torque? Since this is part is missing, I am wondering whether all the nuts along the bottom of the engine case are "loose." Should I re-torque them? If so, what is the proper torque? Thanks Brad __________________ |
If your motor isn't leaking then I wouldn't touch the nuts that are already there. The missing bolt isn't anything special. Just get a metric bolt that will fit a nut (these nuts are the same as the valve cover nuts). Put it in with aluminum crush washers (like on the other nuts). I would only tighten snug as you don't want to disturb the case and cause a leak. The spec torque is 18 ft/lbs.

Thanks Andy. This is good advice, as it is not leaking now.
