valve stem seal removal
I can't seem to get the valve stem seals off of the guides very easily. The seals have a metal base that fits over the end of the guide. What's the technique for removing these? I can't really get a flat head screw driver on either end to use as a lever to pry the seal of the guide...also don't want to bugger up the cam housing sealing surface. These are '74 heads with possibly original seals. Thanks.

They should pry off with a screwdriver pretty easily......use a piece of leather or whatever to protect what you're prying against.

the two screwdriver method works pretty well. be sure the top screwdriver blade is on the dull side, so it doesn't gall the valve stem. the lower one provides a raised pivot point and protects the head from pry marks.

Is there a way to remove them while the cam towers are on the heads and what tool would you use? Don't think a screw driver will get enough of an angle with the cam towers on.

Maybe if you bend the tips of al ong long nose plier?

get a vw rabbit stem seal remover tool. basically pliers with cups on the ends.

John,
I figured there had to be a tool for it. Thanks for talking the time to answer. |
the rabbit seals are a bit smaller than 911 seals but the tool will probably work.
