Stuck Wrist pins
 

Yesterday I was tearing down my engine, and in the past the wrist pins have always been a little sticky.

This time, they are really sticky.

I haven't tried heat yet, but wanted to know "how much heat???" should I try???

I also ran a threaded rod through the wrist pin and tried pulling the pins out (different ones that I could get to) by tightening the opposite end, pulling the wrist pin. Still no luck....


SO - How much heat???

Mine were a bit sticky. I applied ALOT of lubrication, heat from a propane torch, and gently tapped them out with a wood dowel and large hammer. They popped right out.

I don't know what temperature they got too, but remember they get a good dose of standard operating temperature from the combustion chamber.

Oh yeah, I can't imagine I'm gonna heat them up nearly that much!
(remember mine's a turbo - smokin hot)

Thanks, just got back from the shop, where I tried heat, didn't work... Going back to hardware store to try to make a different puller....

Try the tapping method with a wood dowel. You are less likely to break something/scar something. Do you have a dead blow hammer? They are cheap at harbour freight...

Remember to brace everything.

Once you get them out, take some emory paper (400 or no heavier than 220 if I remember correctly) and polish the openings and the wrist pins. It will make a difference!

Once they are out, check your openings to ensure they are not pulled out of round.
