3.0L SC Mahle head gasket groove machining Can I do this???
I have a 1980 SC motor that suffered from broken head studs. The outer gland of the head gasket groove on the cylinders got damaged from the head gasket falling apart and getting blown out of its groove. The cylinder walls are in great shape with the cross-hatch still very visible. Can I machine the cylinders to clean up the top surface as long I keep all of them the same height. The only dimension that would be changed is the actual depth of the head gasket groove. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks-Matt |
I had a similar problem. Issue is the plating and the chamfer at the head-cyl mating surface:

However, there was a fellow on here last month that had a difference in height between outer and inner groove mating surface. He put them on a lathe and cleaned them up. You may be able to do the same. See thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=333701&highlight=CE+rin g Best regards, Michael |
Thanks for the response Michael! I am going to try machining the cylinders, I would hate to throw them out because I am on a budget. I'm not sure if I am going to put them on a lathe or surface grinder. I have acces to both. I will let you guys know how I make out.

If you like, for the price of postage I can ship you one of my scrap spares and you can experiment on it. I was just going to cut it in half and make it a paper weight or trophy piece or something like that...
pm me if you like. Best regards, Michael |
