964 Case - Timesert or Case Savers?
I'm thinking that Timeserts might be preferable to the Case Saver on the aluminum case. 4 studs removed so far. 2 were pulled. Any advice based on your experience?
Thanks! |
Wondering if there's any preference? Timeserts seem preferable due to the shoulder, which case saver doesn't have, and the finer threads for aluminum.
Anyone have any experience? |
CaseSavers are always preferred because of their course threads. The lip has little or no value in this application.
CaseSavers are also made of steel and Timeserts are make of some sort of soft alloy. Timesert is making a stainless insert now but the fine threads are still an issue. That said, either will work. |
Thanks, Henry. I understand that logic with respect to the old mag cases, which, I believe, are considerably softer than the newer aluminum cases. I am concerned about the differences between the mag and aluminum case like in the 964.

No need to be concerned. The logic holds true for aluminum as well as mag. Course threads hold best in soft materials.

Steve:
Case Savers, only. Thats all we use on Magnesium and the rare Aluminum case that needs such things,....... |
Where can you get Case Savers?
|
Riddle Machine Company AKA RIMCO

Henry,
I just got the case savers from the above address and the case savers seem to have a finer thread pattern than the timeserts. Do you drill a 7/16 hole and tap with a 1/2 20? |
do the drilling and tapping in a mill, NOT by hand!!! (just in case you were thinking about doing it that way).
|
John,
I plan on having a machine shop do it, are my drill and tap numbers right? |
