Titanium Rods information please
 

Hello chums.

I am on the trail of old rods..: as we all know titanium rods are generally scrapped after so many hours at high RPM..

So I am surprised to have no responses to my wanted to buty post for these.

They are in current race use for the 996 engines, and available new from Porsche at a good price, so I would have expected plenty of race shops to have shelves stacked with the used up rods..

Can nyone point me in the right direction to acquire some of these?

Porsche Racing dept in Orange Co., TRG Racing, Andial, Canepa Design, Aase Racing come to mind.

PMNA has a pretty decent stock of NOS, NLA and sometimes used Ti rods. Are you looking for rods for an air cooled or water cooled application? I know there are rod manufacturers that make Ti rods for older (air cooled) Porsches, check Carillo, Pauter, Arrow(DKE). You can always go custom, Pankl(+1) and Cosworth come to mind.

Pankl is involved with Porsche these days, cant tell you how I know or what motors they are in though.

Are you planning something big?

To lower costs, Honda used recycled ti from the aircraft industry to manufacture the con rods for their NSX. I'm sure it was pretty high quality alloy though.

David, From what I am told, the teams that run the 996's in compitition do not touch the internals of the motors. In the 24hrs of Daytona, Farnbacher/Loles in the #85 car, blew the motor with just about 90 minutes remaining in the race. I was talking to a person from the crew of the #85 car, and they said they are not allowed to tear into the motor. He advised that they will put it in a crate, ship it back to PCNA, and they send another motor out to replace that one.... If this is true... then there might not be as many "used" parts available as one might think....

That's true for current models, but not for earlier cars, Candy.

It would help if we knew exactly what kind of Ti rods you are looking for. After the new stuff is houred out, its houred out, gone, goodbye. Most likely goes back to the manufacturer for analysis if it breaks or to the recycler.

The older stuff though, who knows.

Hello all.

I am mainly expecting to find the currently available rod..the one in my hand has PN 996.103.012.98, and is made by Pankl.

Its quite cheap from Porsche Motorsport..about $600 apiece..

But for my app, I only need used rods..
