can a non-turbo car become turbo/supercharged and pass CA smog?

I have a 964, and am curious if I install a turbocharged engine or add a supercharger, can I pass smog in Southern California? I have a C4 so all I do is take the static tests at idle speed and 2500RPM, which is easily passes. (no treadmill)

Any thoughts??

I'd really like to add some heavy-duty power, but don't want to have to uninstall everything every two years for a smog check!!! ;)

It would have to be a CARB (California Air Resources Board) approved kit/setup; not sure if a CARB-approved turbo/supercharger for the 964 exists. If the "stuff" under the hood doesn't visually match the stock engine with emission equipment included, the smog guys will fail you (unless the non-stock gear has a CARB sticker/number or has been approved by a smog referee).

Thanks Jon; if I use a 965 setup, which is legal albeit in a 965, I wonder if that would work!

Engine swaps are not illegal in CA, but you do have to get the setup approved by the smog referee. Putting a turbo engine from the same model year would probably be easy to get approved (as long as you used the 965 emissions gear). It's the guys who put a 3.6 in an SC that have a hard time (need cats, working check engine light, OBD port, etc.).
