Engine case before and after

I dug up an old shot of my case "before" tumbling and cleaning and "after."

As I near assembly time, I am making sure the details are right. I used tool blackener on the original studs which were a black oxide finish. I have seen VERY nicely done concours cars with studs with the finish worn off, but this was a very simple step that will make this engine look like the ones in the factory shop manuals!

The corrosion protection is a coating of oil. The factory went to zinc-plated studs in later production, but in these days, the DIN studs were black oxide with an oil finish.

I also found the correct black oxide wave washers and the nuts went to the plater today.

Enjoy!

The blackening agent is a mixture of selenious acid, phosphoric acid, copper and nickel.

How did you get all the nooks and crannies of the case so clean? I am having issues getting all the dirt out of those sumps between the crank journals.

John, here's my thread on the case prep. Not expensive. Aluminum 901/05 Engine Case Tumble-Polished: Perfection Defined

Andrew, my stuff has gone to the plater already! But I'm always looking for the right stuff.

Hey John - I'm just getting a whole bunch of stuff plated in the next week as wekk. If you find you have some bad hardware after plating, I'll fire off some of my plated stuff. Are you doing the hardware in yellow zinc or cad?
Regards,
Andrew M

Silver Cad. Yellow Zinc is late sixties or early seventies, wouldn't be RIGHT! Thanks for the offer.
