engine oil screens

Nobody makes much mention of these:



Are they to prevent catastrophic failures from polluting the
oil system?

I'm guessing since they don't exist in later designs and nobody has
made a replacement part they are unnecessary and should be simply
left out.

Many people leave them out when rebuilding their engines for several reasons but one of the main problems is that the (plastic ?) edging becomes brittle with age & bits fall off into the oil contaminating it.
