REAL Cadmium Plating of Engine Hardware
WOW. Look what just came back from the plater.
It's REAL, honest-to-goodness, environmentally-unfriendly, don't-get-it-on-your-hands silver cad! Just like the 356 and very early 911. Not silver zinc, clear zinc, yellow zinc, zinc dye chromate or any of the other processes. The detail on the headmarks came out great. A HUGE shout-out to Mike the Elder from Brooklyn, NY (NY65912) for making this happen with his usual professionalism and meticulous attention to detail. Thanks Mike! My debt to you goes way beyond Spaten and Weisswurst! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188475452.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188475649.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188475668.jpg |
Is this a commercially available service ?
|
All I can say is DUDE. Cad plating is like real hard baked enameling...basically unavailable today. I bow down.
|
You've got a sickness Cramer! Nicely done sir!
|
Michel, this was arranged for me by a friend so it's not really commercially available.
Kenik, we should talk about what hardware is on your brown car, could be interesting data. Chris, coming from one similarly afflicted :) I regard that as a high compliment. But this is just restoration. THIS is a sickness. . . http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1188666712.jpg |
There are metal finishing companies in SoCal that still perform cadmium plating as well. I have been using one particular shop for over 20 years and they do Type 1 Clear as well as Type 2 in Clear, Gold or Olive. They also perform the other various plating methods such as anodize, nickel, zinc, etc.
We are doing a 917 rebuild right now that had various parts cad plated at the last rebuild and it still looks very nice (as it should given the low amount of use these engines get). Ralph |
Ralph is correct -- one plater located in Irvine does offer real CAD plating, gold or silver and per MIL spec of your choice. Electrolurgy is the name of this place.
