Diary of a rebuild...Updated 08/09/2007!!

Im new here, and im just bringing down my 3.0 1978 engine...

The compression found in the engine right before disassemble is:

1=75 psi
2=110 psi
3= 0 Psi And leaking
4=75 psi
5=100 Psi
6=100 psi

The suggestion i get from the technician is to machine the heads, valvles, and wait for the pistons and cylinders as they are teared appart to decide wether to re ring or change cylinders and pistons..

The engine has 83,000 miles, thing which does not sound as too much.

I have the record of this car for over the last 15 years, and the car has never had major repairs to the engine, but a head gasket replacement..

Any thoughts??SmileWavy

Once the engine is apart you can measure all the parts and replace as needed. There are specifications for things like ring gaps, ring clearance, piston wear, cylinder wear, etc.

If you are going all the way to the pistons... its really is not much more to just go all the way and split the case.

I would suspect that #3 lost its rings and may need a new piston. I'm biased as that is what happened to me with my SC. Even so #1 and #4 look like they will need some work. A leak down test would tell you more, but you already know you have to rip off the heads at a minimum so it may not be worth the effort.

Best regards,

Michael

Hello every one...This is an update...

As we brought down the engine, i took some pictures of the intake valvle and i noticed it looks remarkably clean...

Does this have an specific meaning or just luck?

Today and tomorrow we will strip down the engine and will keep up to date with the findings...

Thanks for the replies...SmileWavyhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1189199326.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1189199350.jpg

Intakes are almost invariably clean due to being constantly being washed by fuel and fuel additive (detergent). Exhaust ports are more telling.

My intakes and most exhaust ports were clean as well... the valve stems were still worn out of spec and I needed a total head rebuild... Sorry to rain on your sunny day ;)

Keep at it!

Best regards,

Michael
