CIS upgrade for 78 3.0L??
 

Hello There:

Has anyone had any success with taking a complete CIS system from a 1982/83 and mounting it onto the 1978 3.0L engine?

Is this possible? What are the drawbacks to this process, such as emissions not working properly or parts missing that would need to be customized?

I have a complete system with steel fuel lines that I would like to use on a 1978 3.0L engine, since it came with the plastic fuel lines. And, would the air pump and air injection system need to be removed from the 1978?

I appreciate all comments and suggestions.

Can you post some photos of the CIS system you have with the steel fuel lines? I am in the middle of o rebuild on a 1980 CIS engine and I have the plastic lines also. I'm interested to see the steel line setup.

The idea of putting a small port CIS injection on a big port engine makes no sense.
The fuel distributor, warm up regulator, small runners and lambda system are all a step in the wrong direction as far as performance is concerned.
If all you want is steel lines then install the small/steel lines on the early system.
If your purpose is to remove the air pump and nozzles, then install the fuel dist., wur and lambda system on the big port system.
Remember that the lambda system requires an ecu. The late cis will not work without it.
BTW: steel lines offer no performance over the plastic ones.

Ya Henry, I was kinda thinking the same. I am still interested in see the steel lines that Ed has though. My plastic lines are not in the best of shape and I may replace them all with the correct size steel. Are these actual steel or braided?

The lines are solid steel tubing.
As for your plastic lines, generally the only part of the lines that show wear is the rubber protective coating. The rubber cracks and looks bad. It is very easy to just peel the rubber coating off to expose shiny black hard plastic lines. The rubber coating was designed as an insulator but really isn't necessary.

Sorry for not posting back for a while. I was under my 944 the last few weeks getting the belts done.

Henry, thanks for the input on the CIS system. I had no idea about that swap being a bad idea. I am looking to just replace the steel lines, so that will work for me. The problem was, one of the plastic lines had a leak in it. Since I have an entire CIS system from a 1982 911SC I thought I would just do the exchange...good thing I did not go that route.
