Small Cracks in Case - Is This Normal ?
cleaned the gunk of my motor and found these small cracks. i'm not sure if this is normal or if someone overtorqued the case nuts.
any suggestions ? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191435752.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191435775.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191435799.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191435823.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191435847.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191435875.jpg |
Those are just casting marks, you should be able to feel them raised up.

Ya, I asked the same question a while back.
Here is the post: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/364707-normal.html |
would have sucked if the case was bad !!!!
|
Heh. This one comes up 1-2 times per year. I imagine it's scary if you don't know...
|
Darn! We ought to make it a point for the first responder to these to say that the case is trashed. Then wait 1 day before telling the poster we're kidding.
Would that be mean? |
I verified there was no crack in mine by using penetrating dye:

my main concern are the ones that spread out from the case studs/nuts. they look like they spread from overtorqueing or something. one even looks as if it has a little piece that's chipping up.

My favorite:
When I'm around someone I know will be assembling a bottom end, I grab an extra oil-pump seal out of my shop and carry it in my pocket. Then when the last thru-bolt is assembled I pull it out and say "isn't this the oil-pump seal?" :D ppl hate me. ;) |
