Nology or Magnecor (Spark plug wires)?
 

Hey all-

planning the final bits of a 2.8 short-stroke wee-beastie motor with high-butterfly MFI, twin plugs, all the goodies (yeah.....:rolleyes:...I wish I had one, myself). I have always used Magnecor wires when I didn't use OEM, and I've had nothing but success , but the owner of this engine asked me to look into Nology wires. I have done some research online but nothing beats the Pelican crowd when you're talking about 911s.

So, experiences with Nology?

I don't have any experience with them. I think they might be the wires with the capacitor in them. They are supposed to save up the charge until the capacitor fills up and then sparks with increased current due to the capacitor discharging. I doubt they make any difference but if it makes the customer happy and you charge a nice little mark-up then they are a wonderful thing.

The cap is snake oil. Get Magnecor's. I just bought a set of Clewetts for my race car and I like them very much.

I had a set of Nology's - made no difference on the dyno on my 356 engine. Go with the Magnecor's or Clewetts and put on an MSD ignition. :-)

I have a very un-scientific point of view on this if you see the brand advertised the side of a civic with a fartcan it is probably crap

thanks guys. i was feeling the same way--get magnecors or maybe try the clewetts. my customer has owned a lot of porsches, though i don't think he is the most knowledgable on some of the more technical aspects. he just told me to look into them because he has a set on his 993 GT2 and said they work very well. just doing my due diligence. I don't think he would be upset at all by the decision to use magnecors, so that is what I will use.

Those trick wires all get their good reviews from guys replacing 20+ year old wires with their new ones... well duh! Of course they'll work better. When I replaced mine, the wire to the cap was completely severed in half except for a thin 1/4" flap holding it on... Couldn't believe that the damn car still ran!

The only thing I don't like about the after market wires is that they short you big time. They never give you enough wire to run it in the factory locations. I have Magnacores and it bothers me every time I look at it... but I'm too cheap to just buy the raw cable and fix it ;)

I actually put the plug wires together myself, and custom-cut them to fit the layout & type of the engine. I much prefer the magnecor plug connectors to the Bosch ones...and I'm positive magnecors work better than stock.

I used them on my old superbike and had no spark on two cyls.After replacing them with good wires it ran fine.

they are junk

magnecor replaced the stock wires in my 1988 3.2 in 2001, that along with a new cap, rotor and platinium plugs made a dramatic change in engine driveability, I have seen big price differences in magnecor suppliers. check around to see your getting a good price. i got the 8mm wires and feel they are the best wire around.

Anyone remember Bruce or another guru reporting on his test of Nology wires, maybe two years ago? Bottom line, they weren't very good.
