machine shop opinions
winter is coming and body repairs will be on hold til the spring.
so time to start work on the engine. regarding machine shops; what can be done at my local quality shop, or does everything need to go to a Porsche specialist shop? i would think things like oil pump upgrade and case mods should be done by an experienced shop. but what about polishing a crank? rebuilding heads? resizing rod big ends? cyinder honing? its the shipping that scares me the most, both price and fear of loss or damage. opinions and/or advice welcome especially from the pros. thanks bob |

sounds like you know what your talking about. call your local shop, ask for the expert (not the shop clerk) and ask him if he can do what you want. see if he has access to the factory specs or knows what is best for your particular year/make/what you want, etc. If you feel confident he knows what he is talking about, send something easy to start with, and see how it works out.
I had a horrible experience with my local top machine shop. I asked them to check out some cylinders, and they missed a huge crack in one of them. I almost reused them, but luckily got fed up with how long they were taking, and sent them to EBS out in Reno, Nevada. What I learned after my re-build... spend the little extra on shipping; which, is less that you think when everything is split up, and send them to a shop with a history (Troy at EBS is where I sent all mine). This way you save on having to worry about it not getting done right. Thats just who I chose, do a search on here and you will see a bunch of others like, Henry at supertec, JB racing, and stephen at Imagine auto (not sure if they do machine work, but they could refer you to someone), all do a phenominal job. IMHO - locate the best shop, like the ones on this forum and spend time making good shipping packages - I would not trust a general purpose shop to work on your engine parts. A Porsche pro shop will have all sorts of special tools, fixtures and knowledge to quickly do what you need with known high quality... probably won't be that much more $. E.g. will a general purpose shop know exactly the best valve guide and seal materials? Will they have or have access to a serdi cutter machine with correct bit? No they won't and they won't even know what you are talking about.
