3.6 cam housing stuck to heads
 

i'm trying to get my heads apart but they are very stuck to the cam housings. i don't want to over do it and break something.
so how can i seperate the heads from the cam housings?

Are you sure you have loosened all the bolts?? from memory I thought you had to remove the rockers and to get to them all? May be wrong though

Do you count 24 fasteners removed per side (24 up to 3.2, not sure if same for 964/993)? If so sometimes the locating dowel and the glue really freeze things up. I use a rubber mallet to just go around and around the assembly, rapping until the pieces start to let go. For hard to reach places, I use a piece of soft wood about a foot long and beat that with the mallet. If you got all the fasteners, it'll come apart.

911t was right. i need to remove the rockers to get to the other nuts. now, do i need to keep track of which rocker came from where or does it not matter when i put it back together?

i should add that the first rocker i took off looks like new. should i etch 1I, 1E, 2I, 2E, etc on each one respectively?

I wouldn't scribe it. It could create a stress riser that could lead to a failure - same with any part under mechanical stress. Instead, use a cardboard label and attach it with wire or plastic tie wrap, bag it in a zip lock and ID it, or some other non-destructive labeling method. Make sure it goes back with the same cam lobe. They create compatible wear patterns on one another. The rocker shaft, less so.

Ya, I agree with {911pcars}. I put all of mine in zip lock bags and labeled (#1 intake, #1 exhaust and so on).

hey guys, thanks for the tips. very appreciated. this is my first rebuild and these threads have been invaluable.
while tearing down i figured that they should probably go back where they came from. i'm glad i didn't just pull them all off.
another question i have is about torquing the rocker shaft bolts. how small of a torque wrench do i need when reassembling them? i can't even get my 1/4" drive w/ socket and hex bit in there to take them off, much less a torque wrench.

Not sure about the torque off the top of my head. Should be in all the rebuild books.

For installation, begin with the rocker arm closest to the fan. Use a long socket extension and hex driver through the open end of the cam housing. Install in this order: No. 1, 2, then 3. Apply anti-seize to rocker arm bolt/nut threads.
