Engine stand question
 

Maybe I am just burnt out, but I dropped my motor and tore almost all of it down yesterday. I am down to the long block and the exhaust. By chance I picked up a free engine stand today. Will I be able to mount my engine to this stand without getting the Porsche tool? When I try to get it to mount up the little arms on the stand hit the flywheel and won't let me get the bolts all the way through. And finally is there a picture somewhere of how the Porsche tool mounts to the stand?

Sorry for the rookie question but my brain and arms and back are out of it right now.

Also during the teardown I found the #5 cylinder that I thought was stuck, had a broken rocker arm on the intake valve. I haven't checked the bottom yet. We found the rocker arm sitting on the top when we pulled the top valve cover.

There is a yoke, which cost more, with a shaft that goes into the receiver on the stand. There is also a cheaper "arc" that bolts to the existing engine mount of the stand. It is basically the ring portion of the yoke. I have the yoke, which allows access to the flywheel and the clutch.

If was going to use an engine stand I'd get the yoke so the weight is distributed evenly around the case, just my 02

You can get the Mainley adapter that will work well with your free stand. I have it and like it. Everything I have read says you can get by with out a special mount, but it is ill advised.

Maybe there is a Pelican local to you that has one you can borrow.

+1 - get a proper yoke or try to borrow one - I borrowed one. Also re. the stand - I recommend a type that has a wide "stance" at both ends. When the engine gets built up and you spin it things can get tippy.
