911 Carrera Targa 1984 Rebuild

Finally I have started my rebuild project after putting it off for long time. I will do this very slowly due to time constraints but that's ok since I don't need the car. So it's more like a fun project.
First thing I dropped the engine which was not very eventful besides the most difficult job was the least expected, to get it on the engine stand. Reason being I think my jack was not able to lift the engine high enough so ended up using an engine crane which luckily I had handy.

Looks like this:

First screw-up - I promise it won't be the last one  - I ripped a cable that goes from the engine back towards the front of the car. I did not see this connection documented anywhere! My books are: 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911, How to Rebuild and Modify Porsche 911 Engines, Porsche 911 Performance Handbook and Bentley Service Manual which seems to be the most complete. I also took the transmission out to figure out where this cable was connected to. Here is the cable in question. It's the one on top of the cables that go to the starter:

One wire is yellow/green the other is brown/gray. Now the best place for this wire I can come up with is the Backup Light Switch:

Are those wired soldered on to this switch? Does polarity matter? Or where else would this cable go?

I also looked at this diagram:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/PartsLookup/HTML/911_USA_84_86_KATALOG/902-11-Frame3.htm

There is this connector that is marked with "L". What does the L refer to? How can I look this up further? Are there any other good books I should obtain? Maybe one with a good wiring diagram. I have not found a good source for a complete wiring diagram for this car. Any hint is appreciated.

So I guess so far my worries are not too big - yet :)

it was, the plugs are still in the backup switch.

My main projects on this car are:
1.) Clutch replacement
2.) engine upgrade from 3.2 to 3.5

Is this the right kit to buy:

PS100-001-M362

Motorsport Piston & Cylinder Set 100mm bore, 10.5:1 comp, Carb/MFI only, 3.2 to 3.5 Liter, 911 1984-89 Brand: Mahle Motorsport

Or should I look at Andial?

Actually it seems the choice is between Mahle and LNE cylinders and Mahle vs. JE Pistons. But I don't see JE pistons for 3.5.
Which pistons would I use for LN Engineering Nickies Cylinders, set of 6, 3.3/3.5 100mm, slip fit, 911 Turbo 1978-92?

Help with Heat Exchanger part

I have a problem with a part that I am unable to identity as it does now show in any of the parts lists. It seems like a kind of sensor but I don't know what it is exactly.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1193623633.jpg

As you can see it is cracked, almost broken off 180 degrees and it will brake of easily. How do I go about to replace/fix this? What part(s) do I need to get to replace the broken pieces.

OK. So seems to be the EGR valve? How is this mounted to the heat changer? It is not clear from any parts diagram I am looking at how it is mounted. Is there some good diagram available somewhere?

I did a 87 and it did not have one of these that I remember. Is this car a euro? Calif car?. What is it for?

efhughes3 10-29-2007 07:21 AM

It's not on my '84....

gigem75 10-29-2007 07:51 AM

hard to tell but it doesn't look like a factory weld holding it on

slodave 10-29-2007 04:33 PM

I don't have that on my engine either.

Thanks for all the replies. I agree it looks somehow not original. It looks messy how this is attached. This is what makes me wonder and bother. I should have said that this is a European model, imported from Germany. However the part is a German part from a company in Neuss Pierburg KG: http://www.kspg-ag.de/index.php?fid=1282&lang=3
So I don't know what to do now with this. I think there is a pipe that goes from this piece into the air cleaner. There is a hole in the air cleaner housing where a hose is attached with a clamp and I think that connects to the part on the heat exchanger:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1194120791.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1194120802.jpg

As you see there is this hose that goes straight into the air cleaner housing:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1194120840.jpg

and I think the other end attaches to a metal piple that connects to this valve that is attached to the heat exchanger.
Anyone can make sense out of this? Thanks.
