What do I have?
A while ago I picked up supposedly a 2.4T long block rebuilt to 2.4S. The price was right and I wanted to run it in my car while I pulled the supposedly 2.4T out to rebuild. I say supposedly because both of these engines have been apart.
Finally getting around to R&R the engines and I notice that the 2.4T that was in my car has much smaller intake ports than the 2.4T rebuilt as an S has. The ports on the engine in the car measure about 1.2" while the ones on the long block measure about 1.4". The heads on the long block look untouched but someone obviously tried to open up and port the heads on one side only of the 2.4T in the car. Why only one side...who knows? Why would you use 13mm nuts on all stud cept 1 and put a 12mm nut on? Why would you use nuts that obviously from a bicycle wheel in some spots? All found on this engine in the car. Obviously a hack job. But it ran pretty good. Anyway, without tearing them down...any ideas? Brian |

Hmm, 1.2x 25.4 = 30.48mm
1.4 x 25.4 =35.56mm OK, so somebody ported the heads on the "S" to around the original "S" spec. Isn't that what you would expect? Porting only one side would be a giant mistake, the airflow would never balance and the engine won't run right. Who would use 12mm ATF nuts on the intake studs? The FACTORY. These make it easier to get the intake off and the torque's not that high really. If some subsequent turkey rebuilder used replacement nuts, that's where the 13mm ATF nuts come from. What is the marking on these fasteners? It should be barely visible on one side of the nut, this will tell you what is original and what is not. Ditto the other engine fasteners. Anyway, what are the engine type numbers stamped on the cases? But you are right, only a teardown will tell. WELCOME to the forum, you will find a lot of help here in getting this sorted out.

Kind of suspected that with the intake ports. The ones on the S engine do not look ported but look factory I think. The ones on one side of the T are obviously different from the other side as you can easily see the grinding marks on one side while the other side is smooth. It looks like someone just opened up the intake ports to about the size of the gaskets that were put on. And just at the mouth. The other side was left alone.
Good to know about the 12 mm nuts....I'll have to source some more then. |
