timing issue 80 930
 
im trying to adjust my timing and when i hook the vacum back on the advance it loads up and stalls. whats up? let me check the firing order on my cap.

do i plug the vacum line or just leave it at atmoshere when i remove from advance?

Timing
 
My repair manual (1978) says that the timing is set with the vacuum hose on, then to disconnect the hose and check timing at 4000rpm. It doesn't say whether or not to plug, but one would assume that it should be pluggged, otherwise you would have a vacuum leak.

Is your car usa, cali, or euro version?

For usa keep it installed, for Euro take it off, for cali...I would have to check my manuals again. Make sure you set the static timing before you start the engine. Static timing is set by putting the engine at TDC and making sure the distributor rotor is pointed at the notch towards the back on the body of the distributor. You may even have to re-index the distributor by pulling it out and move the rotor so the next notch on the gear is selected.

I have heard of many people having issues when the port is pluggged. I was told to leave it to atmosphere. That is just what I heard though, not fact.

does the dist turn clock wise or counter clock? it is a ROW car.

all 3.3 turbo rotors turn left (counter)

As per Porsche Factory Manuals (3.3 turbo ROW)

2. Disconnect Vacuum hose at distributor (guessing that means dont pinch)

3.make adjustments with oil temp at 80 degrees. The 30 degree mark on the pulley must stand still 1mm to the right of the notch on the fan housing with engine running at 4000 RPM (1mm = 1 degree on the crank shaft.


Euro Specs: 29 +/- 2 degrees BTDC at 4000 rpm
Usa Specs: 7 +/- 2 degree ATDC at 1000 rpm (+/- 50 rpm)
Japan specs: 15 +/- 2 degrees ATDC at 1000 rpm (+/- 50 rpm)


According to all of this when you get your timing light out, you will have to run the engine up to 4000rpm to get a reading (might need some ear plugs)
