Valves,..seals & cleaning?
I'm moving along on my budget top end refresh, brought on by broken head studs. It's a 78'SC, 100K which has not been fired in 2 years.
Heads are off and the valves are out. Valve are in spec., haven't checked the guides but there is no wiggle or rocking at all. So I'm betting there ok. My question,... the valve seals seem hard (like a dried out pencil eraser, not crumble just hard). There redish/pink in color,.. should I replace? They don't look difficult to remove, but I'm worried about replacing them. Do I need special tools? I can't find any info. on the board. Secondly do you think I can use a wire wheel to help remove the carbon build up on the valves and pistons. I've soaked in Berrymans, and it's not getting the baked on carbon. Any comments appreciated. Thanks Doug

Can't help you with any valve seal info. But, I would be very hesitant to use a wire brush on the valves especially if you are not planning on regrinding them and the valve seats. You might want to regrind the valves and seats. If you aren't going to regrind I would at least lap them in with a lapping compound. To clean the valves you may be able to use the correct color/grit scotch brite pad, but I am not sure which to suggest here. I would stay away from the valve stem with anything abrasive. These are usually pretty clean anyways.

Seals are cheap and should be replaced any time the top end is apart.
