Build a turbo motor???
Hello,
I need some advice. I have a 1982 911SC coup. I will be rebuilding the engine and trans over winter. As for some background I finished a 1984 3.2 complete rebuild last winter and been driving it over the spring/summer. My question: is it possible to build the engine into a turbo engine? I know anything is possible with ample money. What parts would I need, piston, turbo, ECU, etc? Cost? Thanks for any advice. Rick |
Not sure what all you would need, but many have said it is a lot cheaper/easier just to buy a 930 engine and transplant. Also if you do turbo an SC you usually can't run nearly as much boost as a stock 930

You would need lower compression pistons and a fuel management system other than the stock cis. Cheapest way to go would be to get a turbo cis and go from there. Plenty of guys are taking them off to go efi. In fact, the heat echangers and turbos can also be had as take offs.
Not that big of a deal, but it can add up fast. ($) I run a 79 930 efi twin plug twin turbo by spring and I built from scratch a 2.1L race motor making 350 RWHP. Ed So to get it going: Turbo cis intercooler turbo turbo exhaust cross over pipe (would mate right up to you stock heat exchangers) turbo muffler piping lower cr pistons (you can run the pistons you have, but not with much boost. EFI would help that so you can run extra boost) |
Are you rebuilding the 3.0? You can turbo the 3.0 fairly easily, as long as you don't try to get greedy with boost. The CIS will run quite well with a few mods, such as the fuel head, WUR and RPM Solenoid switch, so you don't need a 930 setup. It helps to have an intercooler, although mine is the non-traditional type intercooler. I also run 8.5:1 CIS (early SC pistons) in mine.
You can turbo a 3.0 SC engine, but you can't make a 930 engine out of it. There is a distinction between the two. You can make 3.6 type power with a turbo 3.0, but you can't make modded 930 power from it. Mine makes 250 RWHP at essentially 5 PSI, and that was before I got it sorted better. I can't see getting over 300 RWHP from a turbo 3.0 at moderate boost levels (6-8 PSI). Figure costs as rebuild cost plus at least $2500 for the turbo, fuel mods, good rod bolts and head studs, etc. And, add in a boatload of time. Pat |
Yes. I agree on the bolts. Absolutely get good head studs and rod bolts.
Mine is down right now because I did the top end and not the bottom end. Spun a rod bearing because of rod bolt stretch. Now I have arp. Ed |
