Hello Pelicans,

I was about to rebuild my worn out 71 2.2t to a 2.4e when a 74 2.7 cis motor landed in my lap. Please weigh in and let me know what you're opinion is. Here's what you need to know.

Car is in good shape with tight and upgraded suspension, s brakes.
I plan on using the 2.7 and saving the 2.2
2.7 has motor side components of cis
the 2.7 needs a rebuild (studs) but is in good shape otherwise
I already have backdated ssi's
I want a spirited street car, prefer "e" type curves
car will be a weekend driver
using original '71 901 (911) trans
don't want an s type all top end car
like good throttle response
west coast so gas is 91 at best
I have peripheral parts needed. oil cooler, ignition etc.
i don't have a trust fund

So knowing that, info here are your choices (levity appreciated, variations welcomed):

1. Just rebuild the 2.7 stock, run the cis. It'll be sportier than your bagged 2.2t popcorn machine. You'll have better mileage and it'll be cheap(er). You're gonna kill your knuckles putting in that return fuel line though.

2. You've got the engine apart... may as well put in some higher comp pistons and a 964 cam. you'll get a bunch more ponies and it won't cost that much. Better mileage too. That fuel lines gonna be a ***** though.

3. CIS Sucks. Higher comp pistons, e cam. Get your self a shiny set of PMO's. Who cares about mileage? it's a weekend car and your wife drives a prius. You live in southern california you can proabaly make it a few more years before you pay for that new roof.

4. MFI, EFI, dual plugs, engine management etc etc. (voting for this choice requires a $1000 donation).

None of the above-- rebuild "t" motor with new Mahle Nikasil 84mm "E" cylinders and DC "mod-e" cams, re-jet Zeniths for original appearance. The case mods on the 2,7 alone will be very expensive.

Trade your 2.7 for another 2.2t or 2.4 that will bolt right up so you can swap engines at will... then build your new motor exactly how you like it whilst still driving the nice car. Swap in the new motor and rework your old one :) so you can go back stock at will.

I was under the impression... that the 74 2.7 was a straight bolt up to the 901 (911) they both have 5R cases. so I think I will be able to execute euro911scs dasterdly plan.

some how I doubt the case mods will be more expensive than the new p&c's (3k last time i checked), i also would want to do most of the acse mods when building a hot 2.4... case savers, bypass etc. re jet zeniths, really?

I vote MFI- the throttle response is great and the car just zings. I have a T spec pump for sale. It will need freshening, I think.

Dastardly eh? hehe I'm not so knowledgeable on early case fitment :) Didn't they start the 915 in '72? I was thinking you can't mount a 915 based engine onto a 901 w/o some help, but I love to be corrected here so I don't look like a fool face to face ;)

Neither. Get some Mahle 2.2S P/Cs, use that 70.4mm crank and rods from the 2.7 and get a set of John Dougherty's mod-solex cams w/ carbs. This combo is a hi-comp 2.4L smile machine (premium gas only, though). It would also allow you to use your T ports with no penalty.

I think you misunderstand. An 'S' motor refers to having 'S' cams, which is what determines character/power delivery. 'S' pistons just mean more compression, which with E or Solex cams improves performance all around. The motor specs I mention are better for the scenario you called out than any you suggested. Just trying to help.

+1 for that just I would add If you have some extra the S pistons :P but thats an extra, the T engine is pretty good just need a nice lift :P that you can get with the E cams and re-jet the zenith, pretty good with me :D I have 2 911 Ts.

Also some other things you'll have a marelli dist, change that one and KEEP IT LIKE GOLD, put a BOSCH hell a lot easier (:D). Good luck and tell how's it going with the project
