Timeserts vs Keenserts for exhaust studs?

I pulled an exhaust stud that had already been Helicoiled. I've heard about Timeserts for years but we use Keenserts at work (in standard sizes). After getting a crazy online price for Keenserts ($21.79 ea, yes I asked... each), I found some Timeserts online a bit more reasonable( $1.14 ea after $70 kit which includes 5), and then not 5 minutes later a guy at work found Keenserts for about $2.50 each. The Keenserts look pretty serious, but is it worth buying them over the Timeserts that will be here tomorrow?

I would not use keenserts. They are really difficult to remove if you have a problem with them.

70 for the timesert kit, dang I paid way more than that for mine, althought it was the spark plug kit.

The keensert guide prescribes a drill size to remove the four (or two in some cases) staked or locking pins. They really arent that tough to remove.

Timecerts seem to be what most metric folks prefer, I find them brittle and a little too delicate. Rosan's aka Slimserts are my favorite, but in this application, I am not sure they are available.

Anyone know what size Timeserts are needed for the exhaust studs and where to get them?
I haven't worked on removing my exhaust yet, but I will be during the Holidays. I'd like to have them on hand when something happens like a broken stud!!

Installed 12 timecerts on 930 ehaust ports the last time I did a rebuild, worked great with no problems....

I think I bought Timeserts from these guys: http://www.enginetech.com/

The standard length for the 8 x 1.25mm is 12mm, but you could put longer ones in if you wanted.

Thank you John! SmileWavy

Is there a reason for the 6mm difference from what 125shifter posted?

David 12-19-2007 08:12 AM

I was just stating that 12mm is standard, the 18mm are the longest Timesert and there's room for them in the original hole so I agree 18mm is the best option.

Ahhh....I get it now!

Thank you for clearing that up for me.
