I just finished disassembling the 3.0 turbo engine and have some (dumb) questions. I think I remember putting in an o-ring on the top of each cylinder when I rebuilt this engine 10 years ago; when I took the heads off there were no o-rings and I am so confused! Is this right or am I just loosing my mind quicker than I want to?

Also, the rocker-rods that span the cam tower and hold each rocker; does it matter what side faces what way? As in the hex bolt side, can it face the outside of the cam-tower? Does each side seal as well as the other? I notice finally that a pesky drip was drooling down on no. one cyl-head and it was coming from the exhaust rocker-rod on no. one – any suggestions for a perfect seal?

Rocker arm pinch bolt direction: Functionally, the direction of the pinch bolts doesn't matter. However, you should install them in such a way that you can remove the bolts in place with the engine assembled. You don't want to have to remove a chainbox in order to get the pinch bolt out.

Answer to your first question: How in the heck do we know if you're losing it??:D

I'm no expert, but having read tons of info of late, and actually just putting my rocker shafts in today, there are "RSR" seals, which are an elongated cross-section "o-ring", sort of like a mini washer like you'd have on the end of a garden hose. They slide into the grooves on the shafts. Pelican and others sell them. Many view them as a bit of extra insurance. I did end up putting them in based on this.

But, many others don't use these seals with no problem. Either way the primary basis is making sure the cam tower bores are smooth and clean with no nicks or gouges, same with the shafts themselves.
