Ahhh... Progress!
After a miserable 2 years (a selection of my miss-adventures):

Much tanks to TerribleHondo (Mike) and my non-Pelican neighbor, Bill!! They both did an awesome job helping me out! Also thanks to MBEngineering for sending me some missing studs! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196087561.jpg Though, after reviewing everything that was done, I think I put assy. lube on the o-ring for #8 instead of the sily-cone sealant :( Mike pointed out that there was no o-ring just before we put the 574 on... That was a good catch! Things will be moving rapidly now :) Best regards, Michael |
Michael I am 99% sure that you lubed that seal. I do not know if that is a problem or not I am sure someone else with more experience can let you know.
|
The only possible problem with that is if any of the assembly lube got between the case halves. If it did the the 574 will not be where the assembly lube is and the case will leak through the seam at the o-ring. If you had no build up of assembly lube as you mated the case around the o-ring then you should be fine. The factory used no sealant here just a dry o-ring. That is what I do now.

I always put a little oil on that o-ring to help keep it from pinching in the case groove. If you put a TON on, it could affect case sealing... But it you just lightly lubed it with assembly lube I'm sure you'll be fine. I've never used a hardening sealant on them.
CurilT or Hylomar also works well for future reference because they lube and seal. |
Yeah I know I lubbed it... I'm fairly sure we checked the sealing surfaces for issues like lube and low sealant coverage, but you cant check the after squeeze :) We got very nice excess bead on the outside... not too big and no section was missed. Only one way to find out :) finish it and and load it up with oil!
-Michael PS I somehow ended up several head nuts/washers short in my pile??? So I'll be ordering a full complement from our host. Small delay, but I'll use the time to finish my sheet metal. |
Good job, keep at it!! I wasn't there too awfully long ago. My intake is going on in the next day or two, and I'm pretty close to putting it back in.
Enjoy the build, it is extremely rewarding. Or, so I hope!!;) |
That engine is looking pretty!

Would you mind explaining how you got your case so clean?
I've been busting my butt cleaning the outside of my case, with mineral spirits, alcohol, and carb cleaner. But it still looks filthy. I've even got some gasket material on the surface where the chain housings mount to the engine that won't come off. I haven't even started on the inside. Thanks and great job, keep up posting the progress. Rich *Edit* I read through your thread about the hot tank and white stuff, but if you have anymore hints on how you attacked it after the hot tank I'd appreciate it. |
I found a local guy that does Soda blasting. That is using, essentially, baking soda as a media to blast it with. It is water soluble so you can simply use your garden hose to dissolve all the left over 'media'.
