Head Stud Troubles
Im in the process of fitting my aftermarket head stud kit and I seem to be having trouble getting the thread lock to harden. Ive left them overnight then tested them to make sure they have stuck and only 1 out of the 8 I have just tried stood up to a resonable amount of force most of them undo like there in nothing on them. Where can I be going wrong?
BTW im using blue permatec stud lock that came with the kit. Steve |
did you degrease the threaded holes with brake-kleen and blow them dry?
|
Hi John yes I degreased them with paint thinners. Can the temp affect the thread lock?

Paint thinner doesn't evaporate very well. I prefere Acetone or Laquer thinner. There are also primer products for Locktite (they smell like Acetone).

If you used any oil based paint thinner (like mineral spirits) to clean your stud bosses then that is your problem . . . as per the previous reply, you must use a cleaner that leaves no residue. The air temp should not affect the thread locker in the manner you describe . . .

I would concur with eagledriver and JW. I use either acetone or methyl ethyl ketone for prep cleaning. Also, blue Loctite is not the end-all. The special red stuff is the cats a$$.

I would have suggested the Loctite green to be used for studs.
609 I think is the number....permanent...needs heat to take them out. Bob |
I used automotive cellulose paint thinner which is solvent not oil based. I will get some acetone from work and re-do them with red locktite.

If they are not a tight fit that could cause trouble. Loctite thread lock is anerobic meaning it cures in the absence of air. You will notice that it does not cure when left on an open surface.
