Head stud removal on a 3.0l tips?

Hello, I am looking for advice on the most effective way to remove headstuds from the case on a 3.0l SC motor.

Car has 3 broken HSs and I would like very much to only rebuild the top end and not do the lower as the car only has 79K on it. there is plenty of "meat" on the studs ie not broken at the base close to the case.

Are there any tried and true methods? Heat the piss out of them? will I risk internal damage if I heat the case?

thanks for any method help.

cheers
Chris

Use the proper Snap On tool with the unbroken ones, impact wrench is good. Heat with a propane torch, get it very hot all around the stud boss and then use vice grips on the broken ones. I ground some flats on a couple of them when I did my 2 cases, a few were difficult but they will come out. The flats are so the vice grips fit better.

Don't be afraid to turn them in and then out. That seems to loosen the grip on the stubborn ones....along with heat and force of course.

I had success on broken studs by cutting threads one size smaller than standard on the broken end of the stud and using the smaller collet with the Snap-On tool to remove it.

I had to deal with headstuds broken very close to the case. Normally, the only way to grab those would be to weld a nut on them. But I found an alternative solution that worked very well. I used a nut extraction set from Sears, and I described the procedure in my engine rebuild thread;

They gave up easily with a little heat from a propane torch while applying torque on them.

I went to Kragen and bought a cheap wire welder. Welded nuts on the ends of the studs and they came right out. It seems the heat from the welding melted the locktite.
