MFI Pump Rebuild

I need to get a MFI pump rebuilt and i know we haev a wealth of knowledge on this board. So the question is can a smart DIY guy undertake this or do I need to go to some one llike Henry or Gus.

If I can do it where do i get the rebuiold kits and the space cam.

If not who is the best/ cost effective / fastest

Michael

Michael,

Over the years there have been dozens of guys who claim they are going to figure out how to DIY the MFI pump rebuilds. All we have to show for that is a lot of pumps getting taken apart but I've never heard of one being put back together and working right. I'm pretty mechanical but I sure wouldn't run a race motor at 8000 RPM and WOT under load and trust my own work to keep the pump from leaning out and blowing the engine.

The kits are long NLA and the space cams likewise: the only people who repair these are the ones with specialized tools and equipment and extensive expertise. As you might imagine, it's not quite a swiss watch but close.

Gus did mine and I am very happy with it.

John,

I understand your point however the last pump i had rebuilt was running lean at 8k rpm any way so i figured that i have spare time and could give it a try.

I've known two guys who tried this themselves: one was a mechanical engineer and one a PhD in chemical optics. Both gave up. There is too much specialized equipment needed to tune these and too much dependency upon NLA parts. Seals, guts, calbration equipment (have you ever seen a pump dyno? It's insane and HUGE), etc.

Have it done professionally. If you could get it done at home, the cash outlay to make it happen would cost way more than paying an expert to handle it.

I've always wanted to see inside of one of those, too. Somebody please send me one that I can take apart and see if I can fix it.

I've rebuilt a couple Standyne GM 6.5 turbo diesel pumps before. It was a ball buster and supposed to be an "easy" unit to rebuild. I couldn't imagine, nor would want to take on, the task of rebuilding a Porsche MFI pump w/o knowing what the specs are and having all the tools/parts

If it was a pump that I could just take apart and mess with it w/o the worry of it going back on a motor I'd dive right in!

I say send it to Henry. He's got more MFI part in stock than anyone I know of.
