Just starting
Hello. I've got a 68 Targa, mostly rust. I plan to move it and start to restore. No engine in the car. The guy that I'm getting the car from pulled it out and has the tranny and axles back under the car. How do I move this car? I've got a hauler lined up but can this thing roll set up like this? After I get it to my garage, how much trouble to get the motor on the stand? How much does this engine weigh? Looks like Wayne is about to sell another book. Thanks.

The car can be rolled with the engine out. You say the trans and axles are installed? If the axles are NOT connected to the transmission flanges, you will need to support them in some fashion so they do not 'flop about' when turning.
Enlist a couple of stout buddies and you can pick up a 911 engine and place it on the engine stand. If possible, first strip off all components you can get to (intake, starter, etc. to reduce weight). Good luck. |

After lowering the engine on to a dolly, I attached the porsche yolk to the engine and used that as the first lifting point. I used the engine mount carrier to the rear of the engine as the second lifting point. I used c-clamps as stops to prevent the chain on the mount carrier from sliding and the engine from shifting position while lifting. You should be able to see these in the photo. With the chains in place, I used an engine hoist to lift and secure it to the engine stand.

Hey, thanks for the responses. Been gone a couple of days so I was just back and able to see them. I'll crawl under and check re the flanges and the picture (engine attached to hoist) helps a lot. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions

Mo, I just checked out your pictures. My 68 is not quite a rusty as your 69 was so you've given me hope. How did it turn out? I'd be interested in any suggestions on engine mods. I want to keep mine simple. I don't need big power.

I DID indeed have rust issues! Turned out great ...I wanted a dependable driver and I believe I succeeded. Stock 2.0 had 172K miles on it. I rebuilt it myself (other than head work). P/C were borderline ...I touched them with a hone, new rings ...OK so far. Upgrades: Oil restrictor, tensioners, MSD ignition, put fuel pump up front, stock cams. 110 HP + 2240 lbs = BIG FUN! |
