GT3 Oil Pump in 930; anything else needed besides modifying the case?

Hello -

Doing a full rebuild on my '87 930 after it spun a bearing.

I've done the search, and heard the benefits of using a GT3 pump.

- Where can I get one at a decent price?

- Are there any other mods needed besides the case? Do I need to modulate the higher pressure somehow?

Thanks!

Glenn

Glenn:

You don't need a GT-3 oil pump; that 930 pump is plenty unless its a high-RPM race motor.

Depending on which bearing failed, you may need some oiling modifications to the crank, bearings and case. Volume is the issue, not pressure and issues with Glyco bearing quality control.

Steve,

Great to hear from you, and thanks for the input.

The car is mostly used for track, over 500 to the wheels, and I shift between 6500-6800. I WAS at VIR when it happened where I was in the upper ranges for longer than normal periods. The engine also probably has 60+ hours, so it was probably time.

It was the first rod bearing closest to the back of the engine, #3 I think (too early in the AM). It ate into the crank and trashed one Pauter rod. The main bearing wear also is worst at the rear, with less damage towards the front of the engine.

I'm also pretty sure I had some extra trash (metal particles) in the oil tank from a recent repair job on it. Those particles, and /or the rod bearing trash went through the engine.

The crank was previously drilled for extra oil holes by Armando, and it's due back shortly from him again. Going the 2" Nascar bearing route as well. I'm curious what other modifications you'd suggest to the case and bearings (main or rod?).

My concern was the volume as well. I'd recently upgraded my twin turbos and now supply them oil cooling, as well as lube, from the same supply lines (top rear engine tap). They previously only supplied lube on the prior set.

Now you have me scared about the Glyco main bearings which just arrived!

I'm planning an extra oil filter, if not 3 for the break in period. Oil temp was fine but I may add a 3rd cooler (already have the Carrera fender and large Strab center mount).

Your thoughts?

Thanks!

Glenn

From what I read on pelican you dont want to be using Glyco or even the stuff porsche sells... pretty weird.

I am pretty sure steve has the main bearing you WANT to be using but I forget what brand they are.

Glenn,

A while back we were discussing the relative merits of Mahle/Clevite bearings v. Federal-Mogul/Glyco. A number of engine builders have reported questionable quality of the Glyco bearings recently. To summarize that discussion, Porsche was using bearings by Vandervell, and that company was acquired by Mahle, so there are now evidently only two suppliers, and the Porsche applications are made by only one of them. Somebody should probably contact Mahle and ask whether they will be making a 911 bearing, seems like it would make sense, although Glyco was German-owned (Trivia: Dr. Wiedeking ran Glyco between working for Porsche and being brought back as board member for production).

Since this thread is about oil pumps I'll start a new one with a discussion of the 2" bearing.

John,

Thanks. Very interesting. I like the bottom line, without having to scroll through 20 pages of pros and cons.

No input on the oil pump?

On the oil pump, if Steve says the 930 pump is OK, and it's not otherwise buggered with metal bits, I would use it.

Our man MBEngineering posted the part numbers back in August before the Euro got even worse. . .

930 oil pump (930 107 008 04) now 996 107 008 70 (stock in Germany)£913=$1822,35-- now supercedes to 996-107-008-70 (996 Turbo Pump)- $1680.50 here on Pelican

964 oil pump 964 107 011 11 (stock in Germany) £667.44=$1332.22.- now $1145 here on Pelican

GT3 oil pump 996 107 007 94 £1002=$2000 .-- now $1,882 from Pelican

Here is a better picture of a GT3 pump that was for sale for $500 a while back in the classifieds. You can see the additional scavenge pickup.

John,

You rock!

Thanks for the quick and impressive legwork.

I think I'll clean and inspect mine, and likely use it again. Still connect with Steve though.

Many thanks!

Glenn

There you go,.....

Instant disaster,...

Glyco might be quite profitable but their products now leave a LOT to be desired.

I have a GT3 oil pump. I purchased it in Germany and planned to use on a rebuild. It is too much for my future motor and will sell it now. I know it has less then 10,000 miles on it. The German seller srtipped the motor down and sold the parts off ... he made a ton more than waiting for a buyer on the entire motor. He bought car in a auction cheap (body and frame damage).
Email me if you want to buy, make me an offer.
