993 TT Studs don't need a washer?

Hi guys, just checking out the 993 TT head studs at Porsche, noticed that Porsche spec's a special flanged nut for it and it does not appear to use a washer.

Is that right? I just heard from the esteemed Dr. Weiner that my heads are all done (dual plugged, titanium retainers, new valves, mild polish...let the drooling begin) and now I am trying to finalize the head stud choice

As seen in Pelican.....

Engine is an '84 case, 98mm Mahle P/C's at 10.3 compression, Carillo rods, 74.4mm crankshaft, TWM's and some sort of EFI.

Heads are from my '79 Euro SC donor engine....

Advice?

Dennis

You should buy the Supertec head studs. They are better than the 993 TT Dilavar, and they're a lot less money, to boot. You really can't go wrong. For even less, the ARP head studs are fine, but I definitely prefer the Supertec studs--Henry does a really good job with them. I can't believe someone might be willing to pay $950.00+ for a set of 24 OEM head studs, but that's just my 2 bit opinion.

Cheers,
Scott

Supertec is very much on the list, I tend to research things quite a lot and at this point I am getting pricing together on all the options I like....but that means knowing what all the parts cost including the nuts/washers. I was just surprised that the Porsche ones did not use a washer (at least they do not show one on PET)....and not sure if they are needed with the 993 studs.

There certainly are different schools of thought around which stud to use....its been debated a few times.

Of course I am aware that there are several different options for head studs. My point is just that the 'law of diminishing returns' begins to apply as one looks to spending over $1,000 on head studs, all the washers and all the nuts. You can buy FOUR sets of new OEM steel studs, which IMHO would be perfectly adequate for your engine, TWO sets of ARP studs, or one full set of Supertec studs with ample change to take your wife out for a 5-Star meal. It's VERY unlikely (as in the possibility is non-existent) that the Supertec studs, ARP studs or OEM parts are going to damage your engine or cause some problem.

Save your money. No one is trying to sell you inferior products, but they are trying to upsell you on marginal benefits, namely properties like having the word "Porsche" emblazoned on the package...trust me, Porsche parts are not figurative gold, they are pedestrian metal items (albeit well-crafted) just like all the other car parts in the sea.

my 2 c. FWIW.
