Early Alum Case and Mag parts

Question - when using an early aluminum case, can you still use the mag chain boxes and other ancilary goodies from a later ('72-'77) engine? I'm rebuilding my 2.7L with an aluminum case and was also wondering if the gasket kit for the '74-77 2.7L engine will work out for me. Same with the bearing shells ect. ect??
Thanks in advance....just starting the rebuild after the aluminum gear on the intermediate shaft lost a bolt that launched up to the right side chain box and snapped the chain....the shock of the catastrophic failure also cracked the Mag case which is why the Al. case is being used.
Thanks in advance.
Nabil.

Yeah, another good question Kenik! If I keep up buying all this mixed matched stuff, I may end up with one engines worth of all the same year parts!! I don't wanna pay any more though! I just wanna drive!
Cheers,
Nabil

Kenik - all I hear is crickets out here... I would have thought that it would take much more to stump this talented board.....I just don't want to add any more weight than I have to behind the rear wheels!! the case alone feels a ton heavier than the Mag one.

Some of the early 68 motors still featured aluminum cases with the change over to mag happening sometime in mid year. I've seen a couple US version 68 motors which all had the unique smog pump drive set-ups and those covers and boxes were all mag. but the cases were still Aluminum. So the factory did do what you are asking and mixed materials.

Also don't forget the cam carrirers have always been aluminum even when they went to mag valve covers around the same time.

Hope this helps.

You can use all the same stuff. I to was concerned about the weight, one reason I really wanted to use a Mag case, but after looking into what was involved to building a Mag case to take the RPM's I wanted to run, I decided it wasn't possible to get the reliabilty I also wanted, so I am going with the aluminum case and replacing the rear bumper and decklid with fiberglass to to recover some of the weight gained.
