?top end work to return to MFI?
I have a 72 911E that was converted to 2.7 liters with Euro P&Cs, and Weber carbs. I do know from its records that it has Web Cam cams in place of the original. The overall spec is supposed to be somewhere in the range of an RS 2.7.
What I am I likely to need to do to the top end to return to MFI? Thanks |
If the heads were not swapped out, you are OK in that regard. Check to make sure that the heads have MFI injector ports, which will have been plugged by a bolt.
Next, you will need to check and see if your cams have MFI drive. You will need to jack up the car and get underneat an look near the back end of the cam box on the driver's side. If you see this, you are golden: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1152903026.jpg If your car has it's original E cams, you should be just fine. If not, you either have an MFI cam without the wheel, or more likely a non-MFI cam. You will need to buy a new, matching cam with MFI drive from a seller like John Dougherty who will sell you single cams (~$400) and a wheel separately (available new for $160). |
Yeah, the MFI pump drive was the main issue on my mind. The car had its E cams swapped out for WebCam cams.
The injector ports were indeed plugged with bolts. Unfortunately, I am in Iraq and the car is in storage in the U.S. So I am operating on memory here...I can't recall how the area where the MFI pump goes looked. I bet I am looking at having to buy E type cams to go back to MFI. EFI is looking like a better and better option, although of course there are so many hassles with that route as well. I am intrigued by the possibilities for tunability with EFI, but would love the classic look of MFI. I guess I'm torn. D%*n the PO that put the Webers on the car. I'd like to get my hands on him. |
The good news is that E cams are pretty cheap used. I have see them go more than once for $300 a set.
