Cam timing? 3.0sc cis w/964 cams
What timing should I use for a 964 cam-ed CIS 1980 SC? I am thinking I should follow timing for the 1978-1980 R.o.W. 911SC, but mayne some tuners out there have a better idea?

I think you should use the timing from the 964 engines. There is a plus or minus to that spec and you can go to one end or the other depending on what you want. If you still have the small ports (34mm) I would go on the advanced side. If you have larger ports then I would go on the retard side. Sorry I don't know what the 964 spec is.

You might check with pelican name "Jeff Alton" he's built a couple of these 3.0 w/964 cams and seems to know his Porsches...

1.26mm.
Same as 3.2 Carrera (1.1mm to 1.4mm) This came from EBS for 964 re-grind cams. CIS car ran great at this setting with lots of torque. Lyn |
I have set these at 1.26 in the past with both the 3.0 and 3.2 motors and been happy. I have not experimented with advancing or retarding them with in the spec range to see if there was any differnce to be noted.

Talk to Elgin Cams
I have 964 cams in my 81SC and I think it could use some more low end power. It pulls like mad up to 7,200 rpm. I think I am going to retard the timming 2 degrees. |

Kenneth, So by advanced you mean what. 1.31mm is that OK or more...? I dont know what a sport SC is I dont believe I have one it is a stock 1980 (did come with sport seats) with the small port heads and CIS. I have read about the 964 cam upgrade, so I went ahead and bought a set. could you please expand on this subject? I am thoroughly interested.

so you got it exact? 1.26 or were you .10 either way. I found it almost impossible to get it exact so I settled with 1.3 and 1.31.

That will work fine. Now just check your valve clearance (piston-to-valve) and double check your valve adjustment (elephant foot to valve) and confirm your cams are installed on the proper sides of the engine. These are easy enough mistakes; seems common anyway.

ytnukler, cams double checked (rabbit right) .004 on foot as per SC gap spec. Piston to valve aint done that, but Jerry Woods taught that we could use solder, I didnt think it was even possible to have valve clearence issues with a US SC with CIS, unless I was a complete idjut, as the CU is so low. thoughts? should I even bother, most say no, you?

I've never seen it that close on SC's, enough that I would have to worry or do something about it.
I always just do it, just in case a customer asks or ...for whatever reason I need that data later. |
