Mix 'n match spare motor

Is it possible or advisable to backdate a 3.0/3.2 liter case to a 2.5 or 2.7. Looking for a strong case and have access to a 3.2, but want to do something fun for an early LWB car. It will be with weber 40 or 46 - everything else is open.
