2.2/2.4L biral cylinder specs

Does anyone know the as-new spec and max limit spec fo 2.2/2.4L biral cylinder bore vertical taper and ovality? I have only seen these specs for a SC/912 biral cylinder. Thanks! - Neil '67 911S (Ol' Ivory & the Rust Bucket) |

From the tech specs book, max bore wear limit is .1 mm oversize, max ovality is .04mm. Ovality is to be measured at 2-3mm below the top as well as at the level of the base gasket, max bore only at the 2-3mm from the top. The new tolerance is .01 mm, actual size depends on the cylinder markings(0,1,2) Hope this helps.Paul. |
Per Waynes rebuild book:
for 2.2/2.4 cylinders Standard size 0: 84.000-84.010 Standard size 1: 84.010-84.020 Standard Size 2: 84.020-84.030 The measuring point for cylinder wear is 30mm below the upper edge and at the base gasket height. The cylinder is worn if the measurement is greater than the installed measurement by .1mm or greater Cylinder ovality is measured at the same heights, as above, and considered out of spec if out of round by .04mm or more. Note: The 30mm height differs from the 2-3mm in the previous post. also, Waynes book shows the ovality apec at .04mm vs the new tolrance of .01mm in the previous post. Perhaps pjh69911 and others will chime in to help clarify. |
Per my spec book, the ovality and wear are 2-3 mm below the return point of the top ring, which is below the top of the cylinder. I think 30 mm would be far beyond this and might underestimate the actual degree of wear. Hope this clarifies my prior post. Paul.

I think that the 30mm from the top spec and the 2-3mm below the contact must refer to the same place, I.E. where the ring(s) contact/wear area is located. Here is a factory reference that matched Wayne's book.

I've found your reference in my '72 manual. In my 69 spec book, it is as I have indicated. In my large early manual, it says "diameter of the cylinder bore should be measured 30mm above the bottom edge of the cylinder. I guess I'd check the diameter at several spots, and if out of spec, don't use. Paul. |
