3.0 liter rebuild questions

Well today I started on the rebuild with Wayne's book in hand.

Couple of questions.

I bought a long block and of course you're never sure what you bought until you open it up. So far I found 3 broken exhaust head studs. One each on cylinders # 1, 2, and 3. Once I loosened the rockers the engine turned over alright so I'm not concerned about a valve floating around inside. I guess head studs are always a possibility.

This is supposed to be a 1981 3.0 liter, here are the case numbers. On the bottom of the engine, 930 101 104 4R. On the top under the fan, 930-16?
Does that equal a 1981 engine.

Next, Wayne's book addresses the tool needed to remove the Cam nut. He says that after 1980 you just need the tool (9191) that uses "small outer holes drilled into the sprocket". I haven't removed the chain yet but I don't see any holes drilled into the sprocket.

Sooo, do I need the buy the crows foot or that other tool to remove the cam nut.

The engine type 930/16 would be correct for a U.S. 1981 SC engine, but the type number spans several years ('80 to '83, I think off the top of my head).

To get the year, look at the engine serial number running down the side of the case near where you saw the 930/16 designation. For 1981, the third digit should be a letter "B." The "B" designates 1981 production (an '82 would be "C" and an '83 would be "D").

All cam sprockets have holes on the outer perimeter. Are the Spacely Sprockets held on by a big nut or a bolt in the center? That determines what special tools you may need.

Yiup, 3.0 case and 930/16 is the engine type. If you look in the Appendix of Wayne's book you will find a listing of all the specs on the 930/16 engine. IIRC it is a US spec 3.0.

Upper right is the sprocket with big washer and bolt. This is the later style. Earlier style had a nut instead of bolt as wayne's book indicates. Just at the edge of the washer are little holes (~1/4" in diameter). These are the Sprocket Holes mentioned. The special tool has pins that fit those holes.

You need to remove the chain covers and determine if you have the nut or bolt style. Nut takes two tools, bolt takes one. I'm pretty sure you have the bolt, but stranger things have happened...

Please ignore all the red RTV... someone else had no idea what they were doing and I've spent the better part of a year cleaning up the mess ;)

Best regards,

Michael

When that motor goes back together, skip the sealant on the chainbox cover gasket!......

1981 was the changeover year, you'll need to see whether it has a 46mm big nut or a bolt which is 17mm

It has been a long time coming, but the end is near!

Thanks everyone

It looks like I have the early one. Now I need to find the crow's foot and the other tool to turn the nut.

I see them in Performance Products, I suppose their in Pelican as well. That's wait for UPS. Anyone know if Harbor Freight has these tools. I found a store in Salem, Ore. last week.

Thanks

Here's one approach.

HF does not carry these. Maybe there is a Pelican near you who will lend you the special tools. Otherwise, you buy them and sell them after if you only plan on doing this once.

Best regards,

Michael
