Rebuilding 80 3.0 to put in my 82SC - Factors to Consider?
I bought a 1980 3.0 engine that I am preparing to rebuild. When finished, it will go into my 82SC. It has updated chain tensioners and a pop-off valve. I want to rebuild it so that it will be a seamless transplant. What do I need to consider in order to make it seamless?
I know that there are subtle differences between the two including some of the CIS componenents. Here is a list that I found on another thread. 1981 Fuel distributor nonadjustable Fuel injector lines now steel CIS airbox updated Acceleration enrichment circuit added 1982 Cam sprocket attaches to the camshaft via bolt New alternator with integrated voltage regulator Oil temperature gauge scale changed QUESTION ONE: I don't know anything about the 80 engine or if the CIS is in good working order. Would it be wise to complete the rebuild and then use my current CIS since I know it is in good working order? If so, what factors do I need to consider? QUESTION TWO: What engine differences do I need to take into consideration? Wiring harness? Thanks for the help. I just need to know what parts will be needed / modified so that I can get my bulk order ready for Pelican.

I believe your '82 injection should work fine in the '80. There were improvements made in the '81 - '83 injection, and I don't believe there were significant enough differences in the '80 and '82 engines for the CIS to care. The fuel distributors are the same, but the air flow sensor has a different part number. I don't know what the actual differences were in the air flow sensor. The ECU for the Lambda system is different but that was to handle the throttle enrichment changes, which also added a microswitch to the throttle body. So the only significant thing that could make a difference that was changed was the air flow sensor. I think I would assume that the '82 CIS will work with the '80, and keep at least the air flow sensor from the '80 to swap in if needed.
My 2 cents, someone else may have a different opinion.

Thanks Jim ... sorry for the delayed reply.
I plan on doing exactly as you suggest. After I install the rebuilt 80 engine with the 82 CIS I will be able to swap parts if necessary. Should be interesting to see what happens. I will post results ... even though it may be 6 months from now.
