what should we do with these Alusils?

We are now knee deep in a 3.2 rebuild.
About 99% sure these are Alusil, not magnetic and have no cross hatching.
Motor has 160k miles with very frequent oil changes, used fairly frequently for track days.

Have read and reread the "what to do with Alusils" threads... I think it boils down to three camps:

1 - take apart, clean and inspect - put back together with old rings
2 - #1 and clean or properly expose silicon - rering and go
3 - do nothing

Assuming there is a place that has a good track record for #2, I would vote for that - that's my bias because I'm a never leave well enough alone type. If that is not recommended it would seem smart to do #1.

But will likely go with experts opinion from here.

Here is the picture. All cylinders look completely smooth we can not see any lines other than the ring stopping levels.

If they are in spec, use them!

1) I am not an expert!!!, BUT:

Last year I had my 1987 Carrera 3.2 motor rebuilt by AL at Vision Motorsports in Laguna Hills, CA. The car had 75K with bad valve guides. My motor had Allusils but were completely in spec and approved by Ollies in Santa Ana, CA. Al had absolutely no concerns installing new rings and reusing the P&C's. He has been rebuilding 911 engines for 25 years and can not remember the last time he had a failure. In fact, they gave me a two year 12K warantee! So far I have 8-9K on the rebuild and it works great! It did not appear that they honed the cylinders. By the way, I am pretty certain those are Allusils in the photo.

Good luck!

mnmasotto,
thanks for the comment and info.
I'll put Ollies down as a place that can rering Allusils at a high comfort level.

anyone else? comments or recommendations?

I've got a set of Nikasil's I want to get rid of. I bought them by accident thinking they were for my SC motor but they are for a 3.2. I'm on the road right now with no time to give more info but I'll try to get back to you later today.

hcoles,
I've got a killer set of Mahle P/C that have been fully cleaned, inspected and measured to spec. Looking for $600. PM if you want more info. Oh, and I wouldn't reuse the Alusils.

hcoles 04-20-2008 03:25 PM

ncc,
do they have new rings?
