3.0 rebuild questions... yet another thread
 
I've read through probably most of the threads that address this, but I have a few points of confusion.

I know I'm eventually going to have to do this, so I was thinking of starting to source parts now to spread the shock to my wallet out a little bit.

I thought of going the 3.2ss route, but would potentially think of carbs or ITB's (I think my CIS needs a little work, so if I'm going to spend money there thought I might replace it with something with a little more performance). Those added to new P/C's, and the tab is getting heafty before I've done anything.

I don't want to get to crazy with the $$$ because I would like to eventually add another car to the garage ($5 - 6k if I do the labor). Something newer (964, maybe 993) so it will have more ooomph anyway. But, I don't want to necessarily rebuild stock either and maybe get bored (not bored, but you know what I mean) with the car. Car is mostly street, but not a daily driver. DE events, etc. Nothing competitive in it's future.

So, I'm thinking get it back into good condition with some decent mods (typical cam, SSI's, etc). I know my cylindars are a crap shoot whether they are Alusil or not. Let's say I go with anything other than CIS. That means new pistons at least? And cylinders *may* be reusable? I guess if they are not, then going the 3.2ss route is maybe not going to end up being that much more anyway.

If I find used parts (P/C's especially), anything to be careful of? For instance, I saw some JE's for sale (98mm) that were never installed, but they were older. Has the technology changed within the last 2 yrs or so where it's best to stay away from older ones even if they are basically new in box?

Hi there!
I'm currently doing a rebuild / tuning of my 3 litre SC.
I have opted for the "cheapest" solution reccomended in Wayne's book.
I keep the CIS, install 964 cams, replace the P/C sets for Mahle 9,8:1, and will replace the cat for a pre-muffler. In addition, I have a performance muffler allready, and I'm thinking of installing a SSI set later. (Can't afford it right now)
Oh, -and I also will do this:
1: Replace the cylinder studs for a performance type, sold by our host. (For piece of mind)
2: Install a oilcooler in the front (center mounted), with Elephant Racing finned oil lines. (Need to keep cool on the track)
3: Install a Sachs Power preassure plate, with stock clutch and flywheel.

This is a setup for the moderate tuners, reccomended by Wayne, so I think it is a smart bet for you too...
I'll be updating my project as soon as I get my last shipment from Pelican, so I can start assembling the engine again. Eventually, It'll run, and I'll post my experiances then.

Probably some other guys know more on this subject, but I thrust Wayne..

So, perhaps 3.2ss with CIS and save carbs as a future bolt on. What would I have to keep in mind for that though? would save maybe 3k though. I have the crappy small port CIS though. Not much I can do there?

I'm no expert on the CIS, but I think it's best left alone.
Also keep in mind that you may have a "ignition knock" if you go for the high comp 3,2 set. Some people therefore install dual ignition system to the heads. (Not cheap)
This is why I kept my compression ratio at 9,8:1. Also, I stuck to 3 litre to save a few bucks. (Some say there isn't that much to gain by oversizing to 3,2.)

Anyway, you can always convert to custom aftermarket injection system later on. I've heard this is expensive, but yelds quite a few more BHP.
And if you want to go all the way, -install a turbo or two. You don't need a 3,2 litre to get more than you need with turbo, 300 - 350 BHP easy with the 3 litre. I'm told the 915 box will not cope with anything more than this.

Nothing is cheap when it comes to reliable tuning on these cars. This is first hand experience talking, and I'm not done yet..!;)

I've done a bit more researching and thinking and I may be doing as you suggest. Sticking with 3.0 but maybe going up in compression a touch. I don't think I want to do dual plug, but if I'm changing pistons I may switch to carbs.

You can run stock CSI pistons w carbs no problem. It is a great motor w better throttle response. However, not worth the cost to make the conversion unless you just have a set and the skills to set them up.

CIS has its advantages, takes less tunning, and is more efficient.

If you a need a power upgrade add regrind C2 cams like Otto says.

If you need pistons, try to find a 3.2 set up. I would spend mondy on more size before a SSI system. If you want to run hot cams, you need new pistons w more clearance.

Nothing wrong w small port heads and they actually flow better in most cases.

Nothing really wrong with the stock heat exchangers if used w/o a cat. The stock 1 in out muffler is actually pretty good.

To me the best set up is a 3.2 CIS, with C2 cams, true 1 7/8" headers w sport muffler, some quality head work on the small port heads, and a little time on a dyno to get it tuned right.

I am not an expert, just my opinion and what I would do.

If you switch to carbs, you have more options with cam selection, though an S style cam would require you to either get new pistons or have reliefs cut in your CIS Ps.

Recommend PMO carbs and a more radical cam than a 964.
