Turbo vs Carrera Oil Pump Porn

Well, for absolutely no good reason I found and bought a brand new Turbo oil pump to go into my 3.4 project. For background, I am in parts assembly mode now, have a brand new case, Mahle 98mm P/C with 10.3 compression, Carillo rods, '79 heads done by the fine Dr. Weiner.....the rest is still to be collected, things like Coil on Plug, EMS, "S" cams etc.

Anyway, just for your viewing pleasure, here is my brand new Turbo pump beside my brand new Carrera pump. Turbo is a lot bigger and a lot heavier too. I know from my reading that in theory only the scavenge side of the Turbo is bigger, but it sure looks like the pressure side is bigger too...

Only real question is whether I disassemble the pump as per the recommendations on this board, it is apparently 10 years old and been sitting in a box for that time. It is pretty stiff to turn by hand, much stiffer than the equally new Carrera pump.

Dennis

It's stiffer because the cosmoline has dried.

I installed a set of NOS 2.7 RS pistons and cylinders once, and they had been sitting on the shelf so long that the cosmoline had basically glued the piston inside the cylinder. I had to soak it in brake clean and warm it up with a heat gun to remove each piston.

I did the same thing...had a 3.2 pump then came across a Supertec prepped 930 pump. Good stuff!

Sometimes the best things happen "for no good reason."

I would absolutely take the pump apart, it's easy, just make sure you note the orientation of all the pieces so you can get it back together exactly. I bet you will be surprised with what you find inside.
