piston squirters
 

How big of a deal are these? I am stroking a 2.2T to a 2.4 and plan on using the 70 case, which doesn't have the piston squirters. It's going in a 914 to use as a beater for a couple of years. I'm thinking it should be fine, afterall the 70 E and Ss had more hp without the squirters.

Thoughts?

The official reason for the oil squirters was for tighter piston to cylinder clearances for the Nicasil cylinders. So the official line is that if you are not running the 90mm Nicasil cylinders you do not need squirters. In reality I saw enough 80mm 911S pistons with holes in the top to state that Porsche had problems with excessive piston dome temperatures before they started using oil squirters to cool the pistons. Some of those problems may be attributable to the terrible 2.0 combustion chamber design, but oil squirters are the answer to keep it from happening. Another point to keep in mind is that if you use 2.2T pistons (84mm) on a 70.4mm crank the compression goes up. Under hard usage (track) in Florida with cast pistons there MAY be problems with regular fuel.
